At the beginning of each year, after school holidays have finished and the new year dust has settled, I like to walk through my home and feel whether it needs any changes or improvement. I don’t mean major renovations, it’s more about is there a room that I don’t feel comfortable in, or pulls my energy down.
For my example it’s our spare room. We have all our books in there on bookshelves, so I call it our library, a guest room and where we practice our violin. From a feng shui point of view, it’s the helpful people and travel corner of our home. It’s strange, and as if there’s a block to that room. When we moved in, it was that room that had the last couple of packing boxes yet to be unpacked, and it always feels messy. My goal is to make some real changes and declutter, sell or donate the things we don’t need, and make it feel welcoming, comfortable and relaxing.
My question to you and an activity to work on, is to walk around your home, stand still in each room, take a breath and feel the energy of the room. We often get bogged down with too much stuff, or putting things down on the kitchen bench or dining table each day, rather than putting them in the right place. This is a big one for me. If my kitchen bench is cluttered, if feel tense. Once it’s clear I feel a sense of calm
Some questions to ask
How do you feel in the room – happy, confined, stressed and tense?
How do you want to feel in the room – relaxed, calm, energetic, focused?
Now, look at what may be causing the feeling and brainstorm possible solutions.
Is there too much clutter?
Too many kids toys in your bedroom?
Lots of papers on your desk that need sorting?
Is there enough light, either natural light or do you need to add a lamp or better lighting?
Do you need extra storage?
Do you need to add some colour or texture – comfortable cushions, new colourful images on your walls.
You can start small, and work on one thing each day until you are happy with the results and feel the energy lift in the room.
Enjoy your journey!
